Rides, story-telling, crafts, local music performances, and educational workshops for everyone young and old! This years Arbor Day will be held Saturday May 29th at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) 500 Shaftesbury Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
"Other holidays repose upon the past, Arbor Day proposes for the future." These words are a monument to J. Sterling Morton who originated Arbor Day in Nebraska in 1872. The observance spread to Canada and other countries. During the first half of this century it was adopted by many schools as a special day in the spring-time when students rejuvenated their school yards and planted trees. In more recent times, the tree planting ceremony has come to have broader significance as a symbolic and meaningful activity. It emphasizes the importance of conservation and the contribution of trees and forests to the Canadian way of life.
Arbor Day provides an opportunity for events of community interest. It may be a simple or grand affair. Single or multiple tree plantings can be the focal point for a community beautification program, school ground clean-up or celebration of important anniversaries.
